Ancient people called this corner of Ukraine as the Earth Paradise. And the longest river which flows through Vinnitsya - the South Bug - was named by our ancestors as God. The God generously endowed our land with fertile ground (soil) and clean rivers, thick forests and velvet meadows. The foundation of Vinnitsya is connected with the name of Olgerdov's nephew Feodor Koriatovich. In 1363 he laid a foundation of a wooden fortress on a high steep slope, below the confluence of the Bug and its left tributary, called the small river Vinnichka. There is a lot of existing versions about the origin of the city's name, the most probable those which are included in the basis of following words "винница", is the distillery (wine-making plant), where beer and wine was boiling, and the old Slavic word "въно" - dowry, which was got by Koriatovich family, and Vinnichka is the small river. The city of Vinnitsya, which is more than 630 year old, has more than 400 thousand of habitants. The history of Vinnitsya is connected with the names of outstanding personalities. The great Ukrainian writer M.M.Kozjubynskiy was born and lived here, a famous composer M.D.Leontovich and a great scientist M.I.Pirogov also worked in Vinnitsya.
